An Arch in Fleeting Colour
Inspired by Claude Monet ↗
Bonjour, from Saint Louis! A rainbow made of steel… and it changes colour every minute. Welcome back to Arthaus Academy.

No arch yet. Only patches: blue-grey here… a pale pink… a little peach. Sky everywhere, olive for the grass… and look: the arch is already there. I never drew it.

Voilà! The arch is up.

Now, the steel. It has no colour of its own… blue from the sky on this side, pink from the sunset on that. Water lies down and mirrors the sky. Steel stands up… and does the same.

Now, step back. The hardest part is to stop in time. It is the only strength I have.

Attendez… one touch of sky, beside the steel.

My friend Berthe Morisot would have loved this sky. She was braver than all of us. Paint the light, not the thing. À demain… if the sun agrees.

How to read the sources
- [P]
- primary source (the artist's own letters, notebooks or interviews, or an eyewitness record)
- [S]
- scholarly or museum consensus
- [L]
- legend, later attribution, or our invention
- [V]
- line is near-verbatim from a source
- [Para]
- line paraphrases a source
- [Inv]
- line is invented in the host's register; never present it as a historical quote
The dialogue is a scripted portrayal. Invented lines are not historical quotations.
Deep dive 1
patches, not objects, and no drawing; the form appears from colour relationships (Perry's "little square of blue… oblong of pink" and whole-canvas first pass **[P/Para]**; bible §3 "avoid fine detail and outlines").
Deep dive 2
**reflected light on steel versus water**: local colour gives way to borrowed light; the shadow side takes the sky, the lit side the sunset (bible §2 "sky in the shadows" / envelope **[P/Para]**); "water lies down… steel stands up" **[Inv]**.
Look
"The hardest part is to stop in time… it is the only strength I have" (Perry, bible line 15 **[V]**, English only; the French "J'ai cette force-là" left out).
Reveal
Morisot was in his Impressionist circle and he hung and praised her work (Perry, bible §2 **[P]**); "braver than all of us" is **[Inv]** opinion. "A rainbow made of steel" is **[Inv]**. Sign-off bible line 19.
Not repeated from Grand Canyon
no "forget it is a…", no "not black", no "half an hour".

Bonjour, from Saint Louis!
A rainbow made of steel…
and it changes colour every minute.
Welcome back to Arthaus Academy.
No arch yet.
Only patches: blue-grey here…
a pale pink… a little peach.
Sky everywhere, olive for the grass…
and look: the arch is already there.
I never drew it.
Voilà! The arch is up.
Now, the steel.
It has no colour of its own…
blue from the sky on this side,
pink from the sunset on that.
Water lies down and mirrors the sky.
Steel stands up… and does the same.
Now, step back.
The hardest part is to stop in time.
It is the only strength I have.
Attendez… one touch of sky,
beside the steel.
My friend Berthe Morisot would have loved this sky.
She was braver than all of us.
Paint the light, not the thing.
À demain… if the sun agrees.

Every stroke in the painting chapters is a real recorded brush mark from Arthaus’s native replay.

Notes from the canvas
- **Ground:** warm grey. - **First marks (340–540):** slate blue-grey ovals left (where the near leg will stand), pale white and light-blue ovals at the top, then **pale pink** (~460–500) and **peach** at the right (~500–540). - **Time-lapse (560–840):** sky blues and pinks everywhere, **olive** ovals across the bottom (~590–650, the grass); by ~720 the near leg emerges as a grey diagonal and by ~800 the far leg as a pink stroke, without any outline; at 840 the arch, skyline, path and park are all there. - **Refine (985–1385):** the near leg's steel breaks into **blue facets on the shadow side and a pale-gold highlight**; the far leg reads **pink** in sunset light; skyline and path sharpen. - **Touches:** small sky blues, pinks, olives. A pale sky-blue touch lands in the sky **just beside the pink far leg** at frame 1403 (uv 0.698, 0.792; x 0.70, y 0.21 from top).
