Forget it is a canyon. It is a square of violet… an oblong of pink… a streak of orange. Cover everything. Fast, rough, right to the edges. Your first look is the most honest one.

The strokes come closer together… and the canyon comes up out of the paint. Look in the shadows. Not black… violet. There is sky in every shadow.

How to read the sources
[P]
primary source (the artist's own letters, notebooks or interviews, or an eyewitness record)
[S]
scholarly or museum consensus
[L]
legend, later attribution, or our invention
[V]
line is near-verbatim from a source
[Para]
line paraphrases a source
[Inv]
line is invented in the host's register; never present it as a historical quote

The dialogue is a scripted portrayal. Invented lines are not historical quotations.

TO-CAMERA, about 5.9 s after a 2.0 s silent lead

Source notes · bible line 1, **[Inv]**, built on "the sun sets so fast I cannot follow it" **[P]**.

TO-CAMERA, about 11.1 s. THE JOKE (intro)

Source notes · Thiébault-Sisson, *Le Temps*, 1900 **[V]** (bible line 2).

DEEP DIVE 1, over the block-in (shot 20.5 s)

see colour patches, not objects, and set the tonality of the whole canvas first.

Source notes · blockA is Perry **[V, trimmed]** (bible line 3). The colours are adapted from blue, pink and yellow to match what the program actually lays down. blockB is Perry **[Para]**, "cover as much of the canvas as possible, no matter how roughly, so as to determine at the outset the tonality of the whole" (bible line 4).

DEEP DIVE 2, over the refinement (shot 15.5 s)

broken colour built in passes, and coloured shadows.

Source notes · refA is Perry's demonstration canvases **[Para]**, "strokes nearer together and the subject began to emerge" (bible line 5; formerly the react line). refB is bible line 6, **[Para]**: Perry's "blue dome of Heaven reflected in the shadows", and no black on the late palettes. He does not claim "I never used black".

NARRATION over the lean-back, about 8.0 s

Source notes · Perry **[P]**, "no painter could paint more than one half hour on any outdoor effect and keep the picture true to nature" (bible line 14, **[Para + Inv]**).

NARRATION, whispered, about 4.0 s

the orange-red touch at frame 1403 lands on the sunlit cliff at the right.

TO-CAMERA, about 10.9 s. SIGN-OFF

Source notes · the seven minutes per *Poplars* effect, from Perry **[Para]** (bible line 11). The sign-off is bible line 19.

Bonjour!

Welcome to Arthaus Academy.

Quickly, sit… the light will not wait.

I am Claude Monet.

At fifteen, all Le Havre knew me as a caricaturist.

If I had continued… I would be a millionaire.

Forget it is a canyon.

It is a square of violet…

an oblong of pink… a streak of orange.

Cover everything.

Fast, rough, right to the edges.

Your first look is the most honest one.

The strokes come closer together…

and the canyon comes up out of the paint.

Look in the shadows. Not black… violet.

There is sky in every shadow.

Now, stop.

Half an hour on one effect, no more.

After that… you are painting your memory.

Attendez… one spark of sun, on the cliff.

Millions of years for the rock…

seven minutes for the light.

Paint the light, not the thing.

À demain… if the sun agrees.

Notes from the canvas

- **Ground:** dusty mauve. - **First marks (330–560):** scattered **violet, terracotta, olive, lavender, dull pink and plum** ovals all over the canvas, never one area at a time. This is the program doing exactly what Perry describes Monet doing. - **About frame 700:** a full patchwork of lavender, pink, peach, orange and sage, covering the canvas edge to edge. - **About frame 860:** canyon rims receding in **violet and rose**, a peach and pale-gold sky with lilac clouds, and pale limestone ledges and sage shrubs in the foreground. - **Refinement (985–1385):** strokes tighten over the same areas, so the canyon "emerges": an orange sunlit cliff face at the right, crisp rim lines, and **violet and blue shadow** in every recess. - **Touches:** an orange-red mark lands on the sunlit cliff at the right at frame 1403 (x 0.73, y 0.70 from top). - **Final:** no black anywhere. Every shadow is violet or blue.
