Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci brought observation to painting: air between the eye and a distant landscape, the movement of water, and the gradual passage from light to shadow. His notebooks connect looking, drawing and experiment. These episodes borrow that spirit of curiosity for original American landmark compositions.
