Half Dome Beyond the Pine
Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai ↗
Gakyō Rōjin Manji desu. (I am Manji, the old man mad about painting.) I am Hokusai. Welcome to Arthaus Academy.

An easel? That is how the Dutch paint. My knees prefer the Dutch.

Everything is circles and squares. This mountain? Half a circle. Somebody cut it. Cream for the clouds, grey for the rock… then the dark pine, swung from the shoulder. Once I drew with ruler and compass. Today, the brush is the compass.

Hm! Good. Now… the blue.

Berlin blue, all the way from Europe. Dark at the top… lighter… lighter. Then the pine. Press, lift… thick, thin. The line must breathe, or nothing lives.

I started drawing at six. Everything before seventy? Not worth counting. So you see… we are both beginners.

One warm dot… on the far ridge. There.

Hm! Not bad… for a seventy-two-year-old beginner. Every dot, every line… alive. See you at a hundred and ten.

How to read the sources
- [P]
- primary source (the artist's own letters, notebooks or interviews, or an eyewitness record)

- scholarly or museum consensus
- [L]
- legend, later attribution, or our invention
- [V]

Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai

Every stroke in the painting chapters is a real recorded brush mark from Arthaus’s native replay.

Notes from the canvas
- **Ground:** grey-green. - **First marks (330–560):** **cream** cloud ovals, a **Prussian-blue** dab at the very top, **dark teal** verticals at the lower right (pines), and warm tan at the lower left (the foreground rock). - **About frame 700:** a blue sky band, cream cloud bars, grey and tan granite masses, and a **dark diagonal pine** from the left. - **About frame 860:** **Half Dome's sheer cut face** at the centre right, blue-grey ridges, a gnarled pine framing the top left, a warm sandstone boulder in the foreground, and a rust-orange streak on the cliff. - **Refinement (985–1385):** the sky deepens to **Prussian blue at the top and fades lighter toward the horizon**, like a print gradation. The cloud bands become crisp horizontal bars, and the pine at the top left turns from a soft mass into crisp, tapering branch and needle strokes (clearest 1240–1340). - **Touches:** a warm gold mark lands on the sunlit far ridge at the right at frame 1546 (x 0.85, y 0.56 from top). The old touch narration (the sky gradation) now plays in the refine deep dive, where the gradation actually happens.
