Hm! It falls nicely. I've had thirty names. If this goes badly, I'll take another.

Falling water is not a sheet. It is threads… long strokes, top to bottom. Never across.

How to read the sources
[P]
primary source (the artist's own letters, notebooks or interviews, or an eyewitness record)
[S]
scholarly or museum consensus
[L]
legend, later attribution, or our invention
[V]
line is near-verbatim from a source
[Para]
line paraphrases a source
[Inv]
line is invented in the host's register; never present it as a historical quote

The dialogue is a scripted portrayal. Invented lines are not historical quotations.

Scripted episode transcript

I made a tour of the waterfalls once.

Eight of them.

Nobody told me about this one.

Welcome back to Arthaus Academy.

Dark trees first, left and right…

a frame, like a window.

Once I painted Fuji through a barrel.

Then the white.

One stroke… and one below it.

This water falls twice.

Hm! It falls nicely.

I've had thirty names.

If this goes badly, I'll take another.

Falling water is not a sheet.

It is threads… long strokes, top to bottom.

Never across.

Then the bridge, and people on it.

Small… a hat, a stick, that is enough.

They tell you how tall the water is.

Ōi! Come and see,

a bridge in the middle of a waterfall!

…She's ignoring me.

She paints women better than I do, so she is allowed.

One white flick… just under the bridge.

There.

Hm! Eight waterfalls… now nine.

Every dot, every line… alive.

See you at a hundred and ten.

Notes from the canvas

- **Ground:** grey-green. - **First marks (294–574):** dark green ovals at the top left (294–340) and a dark teal one at the right (340): the firs. A blue oval at the top (390). Then a **cream vertical stroke in the centre** (390) and **a second one below it** (494): the two tiers. Grey-cream ovals at the bottom (540–574): the spray. - **Time-lapse (574–854):** a patchwork of greens and blues (634); a white column with a spray fan at its foot (694–754); a dark band crosses the fall in the upper third (814): the bridge. By 854: two tiers split by the bridge, blue cliffs, fir masses both sides. - **Refinement (999–1399):** firs gain shaped boughs (1064–1214); the falling water gains long vertical streaks; the bridge becomes a stone arch (1264–1364); small **travellers in straw hats** appear on the bridge (1314–1364) and on the path at the lower left (1164 onward). - **Touches (1399–1581):** tiny marks; a cream touch at frame 1534 lands on the water just under the bridge arch (uv 0.52, 0.597; x 0.52, y 0.40 from top). - **Final:** framing firs, deep blue cliffs, a two-tier white fall, an arched stone bridge with four hatted figures, white spray, two or three travellers on the path at the lower left.
